SaaS vs. Build yourself

<< back to Technology

The disadvantages of implementing using in-house resources

It is always tempting to build projects using in-house resources rather than outsource a project to a company such as Locayta. However, you need to consider the following:

  • What other projects are you going to sacrifice to do this project, or is there a danger that the this project will continue to take lower priority than other projects?
  • Do you have any search or merchandising expertise in-house? If not, how will you make sure that you get the best implementation?
  • How will you overcome the 'First time' problem – i.e. the first time you do a new project with new technology , it's very common to implement it in a less than optimal way?
  • What happens to this project when your in-house developers move onto other projects? Who will train everyone how to get the best out of search and merchanding and who will do the upgrades in the future?
  • What happens if the open source software that you chose to implement, doesn't have some of the features that you need once you get into the project (NB. You usually don't discover this until you're half way through a project)?

The advantages of using Locayta

From a technology perspective, Locayta has one of the best search engines in terms of speed/accuracy and flexibility of deployment. We also have a very unique offering for Merchandising.

  • We've been in the retail and publishing space since 2002, which means that you will benefit from our knowledge and experience of best practice.
  • Because Locayta operates a SaaS Model, we are permanently engaged with you the client. It's not like the old software licence model (i.e. one-off big licence fees and no continuing contact with the client). Our SaaS model means that you will have someone whose job it is to get the best out of your site search vs. someone who will move on from this project onto the next internal project.
  • It also means that you will benefit from our on-going platform development and from other customer developments.
